From Range to Peak Performance
Everyone wants to excel, whether it’s in business, charity, sport or music. Our default in a world that values specialism is to study more, train harder, focus sharper.
I believe it’s not just about trying harder, but by true breadth of experience that we can reach true breakthroughs. Whether that means Innovation, PRs, virtuoso performances, or lasting life changes.
One of the things that I’m fascinated by is the concept of Range - that David Epstein talks about in his wonderful book: Range - How Generalists Triumph in a Specialised world.
One of the key takeaways for me from the book was that while we value specialism, it’s often those people that are able to bring insights from other fields to their specialism that make significant and lasting breakthroughs.
This idea of range and the balance between chasing performance through specialism, or apply a broader insight to make change and bring transformation is one that I’ll come back to often, and that we base out work around here at Freedto.
But for now I’ll leave you with the David Epstein’s TED talk, which is a great way to get the idea if you don’t have time to read the whole book - and watch this space for more thoughts and content around this topic.
